Reny's opens in Portland to hundreds

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) --  Hundreds of shoppers stood in line to be among the first to go through the doors of the new Reny's store in Downtown Portland Thursday morning.

Reny's has been selling inexpensive, everyday items for more than 60 years. The company believes this is a good time to expand into Maine's largest city.

City officials say it fills a real void for shoppers in Downtown Portland. And some we spoke with agree.

"It is so awesome. It's their 15th store. I love Reny's. I shop at all of them -- which is fabulous!" said opening day shopper Clarise Hinckley.

The new store, located in the old L.L. Bean outlet on Congress Street, means 50 new jobs Some part-time and some full-time.

Pirates open 2011 Calder Cup Playoffs at home

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Portland Pirates open the 2011 Calder Cup playoffs as the top seed in the Atlantic Division and host the Connecticut Whale in their first round, best-of-seven series Thursday night.

"This is what we play all year for, to be in the playoffs, so we are excited to be here," exclaimed head coach Kevin Dineen after his team's morning skate.

The Pirate finished the season with seven games in nine days, so getting a chance to catch their breath before the playoff push began was huge for the players and the coaches.  Dineen says the time off has allowed players to heal up from the exhausting regular season, but everyone is happy to still be playing as the playoffs start.

"You know, it makes for a long summer and nobody wants to start that off-season part of the year," he said.  "It has been a good series all year long and we expect a fierce start to it tonight and Saturday."

We had to check out Renys!

We had to check out Renys!

I'm not sure if it's because Renys opened today or if it's because of the nice weather but downtown Portland is busy in general. Maybe it's a little of both. I for one will be making a trip back to Renys...okay maybe I'll be back regularly. The brand names at cheaper prices are what sucked me in. Carhartt, Columbia, White Sierra and Eddie Bauer just to name a few.

You should check it out too.
