Civic Center modernization efforts moving forward

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Cumberland County Civic Center's Board of Trustees met Tuesday morning with two of the three engineering and architectural firms selected as finalists to design a major renovation to the arena.

"We have been fearful if we didn't do it we would start losing our competitive position," explained trustee John Menario.  "We actually need a lot of work to be done on the building."

An economic feasibility study showed that expanding the seating, adding luxury boxes, improving the concourses to add more concessions stands and better bathrooms, and working to expand the back stage areas could cost between $25 and $29 million dollars, but also help the 35 year old building remain profitable.

"They showed that a significant amount of new revenue should flow into the new building to help underwrite the cost of those bonds," stated Menario.
