An 180th Birthday Party for James Phinney Baxter

Join us to celebrate one of Portland’s most important civic fathers. A businessman, historian, and philanthropist, James Phinney Baxter (1831-1921) served as mayor of Portland for six years. Among many other accomplishments, Baxter led efforts to create what is now Baxter Boulevard, to secure the land between the Eastern Promenade and harbor as public space, and to build the original Baxter Library. The father of Maine Governor Percival Baxter, James Phinney Baxter was also the president of MHS during a period of unprecedented growth (1889-1921) that included MHS’s move to Portland, the Longfellow family’s gift of the Longfellow House, and the planning and construction of the MHS library. This event will include a reception and birthday cake, and State Historian Earle Shettleworth, Jr. will present a brief introduction to Baxter’s life, career, and contributions to Maine.

SEMI PRO FOOTBALL RETURNS TO MAINE

PORTLAND - Saturday will be the first public workout session for Maine's newest semi-professional
football team, the Maine Sabers.

For those who follow Maine football, the Maine Sabers is a familiar moniker. From 1991 through 1993,
the Sabers were Maine's dominant semi-professional football team.

In January, the Maine Sabers were officially admitted into the Eastern Football League, the oldest semi-
professional league in the nation, along with 15 other teams. The team is based in Portland and will
play at nearby fields such as Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium or Scarborough High School's stadium. The
team's 2011 schedule has yet to be finalized but the season will run from late June through September.

The team was organized by Stephen Goodrich, a former administrator with the original Sabers and
Jason McLeod, Windham High School football team's offensive coordinator.

9-year old named honorary Sheriff's Deputy

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A 9-year old boy from New Gloucester is now an honorary deputy in the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office.

Cameron Tufts got a police escort to the Sheriff's department from school, before he was sworn in Thursday afternoon. He's fighting leukemia, and soon the Make-A-Wish Foundation will be giving him the entertainment center he's asked for for his room.

But Cameron also wants to be a law enforcement officer, just like his uncle, Cumberland County Sheriff's Deputy Matthew Tufts.

When asked what he'll tell his friends at school tomorrow, Cameron said he probably won't tell them anything because, "They don't believe anything I say."

Hanaman sentenced to 40 years in stabbing death of girlfriend

PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The man from Portland convicted of stabbing his girlfriend in 2009, is going to prison for 40 years.

William Hanaman, 52, was sentenced Thursday morning in Cumberland County Superior Court.

A jury found Hanaman guilty of murder last December. Prosecutors had argued Hanaman killed 47-year-old Marion Shea and then attempted to take his own life by overdosing on prescription drugs in his apartment in November 2009. Hanaman's attorney told jurors he acted in self-defense.

During the trial, Hanaman testified he didn't remember stabbing Shea. He claimed he blacked out, then woke up in his truck in a supermarket parking lot afterwards and seeing blood on his pants.

Hanaman was charged with domestic violence assault against Shea a month before her death. He was ordered not to have any contact with her.
