Draw-A-Thon in Portland on Nov. 11

Artists, veterans & activists join forces
to Bring Our War $$ Home

Portland, Nov 11 -- Space Gallery will host Draw-a-Thon II, a day of drawing and arts activism to Bring Our War $$ Home on Veterans' Day.

Following the annual Veterans' Day parade the public is invited to join artists in envisioning how the $2 billion Maine taxpayers have contributed to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could be spent instead.

This event is being held in conjunction with artist Kenny Cole's exhibit, “The Hellfire Story,” which explores the history and deployment of the Hellfire Missile System, and its use via Unmanned Aerial Vehicles or drones.

Draw-a-Thon II is free of charge runs from 10am-4pm at Space Gallery, 538 Congress St., Portland.

Speakers from the Nov 2-10 Peace Walk led by the Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist order, and sponsored by Veterans for Peace, will address the costs of war to communities in Maine visited during the walk.

Artists will draw images of how they want our war dollars spent, and create portraits of veterans and other members of the public. Martin Steingesser, former poet laureate of Portland, will facilitate a collaborative group poem on bringing our war dollars home.

Last year's Draw-a-Thon I in Bath drew scores of artists and hundreds of members of the public to envision an economy based on peace rather than on war. Link to press coverage of that event below.

Draw-a-Thon II is sponsored by the Union of Maine Visual Artists, Maine Veterans for Peace, CODEPINK Maine, & Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space.
