Exercise the Golden Rule

Suddenly, I’ve started to really like being single. Part of me actually began to think I would be single forever. At some point in life (hopefully) we all have entered this state of bliss. I’ve grown comfortable with the notion that I may not reproduce and in that case, not have to handle raising a family. Although, I guess if you go on enough dates you’re bound to break that single cycle, so I continue to flirt with the odds.

A few weeks ago I met some friends at the Armory. I had not been on a Friday night for some time, and had no idea what to expect. The dimly lit, hushed den wallpapered in library books was not only packed, but also bumping rap music. It was sort of an anomaly if you ask me, but I went with it.

When I walked into the lounge and down the carpeted stairs I immediately spotted the guy that we all know so well. You know, the one who has never had a girlfriend and was rumored to be such a tough catch. He would not date anyone and you would be lucky if you were the girl he chose. Funny, on this particular night, he was with a girl. We approached each other and chatted for a few moments before he so proudly introduced me to his new girlfriend. She definitely struck me as his “type” which got me thinking.

Flashback a few more days to Oasis where the fifty-cent PBR’S (Pabst Blue Ribbon) and one-dollar Red Bull vodkas (Red Bull or a similar energy drink from a gun) which they serve as a special on Thursday night’s were flowing like water. Ben Kilcollins was playing in the outdoor Oasis arena and still at 11 pm it was 70 degrees in Portland. Amongst the mass of half-naked people dancing like it was a hot July evening, a girlfriend of mine appeared. She had previously been telling me there was someone she wanted to introduce me to who was a good friend of her boyfriends and from what I heard, very attractive. (Sidenote: Is single’s underground definition “Help my poor soul which has not yet found its counterpart?” I’m floating on a crystal clear sea of ecstasy, and everyone keeps throwing me a life raft, but I don’t want it!) Regardless, he was at Oasis and she so excitedly presented him to me, whereupon he realized the not-so-subtle undertones of “You two should get together” and right away he turned to his girlfriend to introduce me. I saw the little bit of shock and questioning on my girlfriends face. He was single for so long, but now?
