Exercise the Golden Rule

Suddenly, after many months, I’ve adjusted to single living. For a long time I was unable to identify with what a “healthy” single state actually meant. I could think all day about what the heck it means to be in love, and why different people define love in such strange ways. I am no expert, and I don’t understand, but I wish I did.

A few weeks ago I met some friends at the Armory. I had not been on a Friday night for some time, and had no idea what to expect. The dimly lit, hushed den, wallpapered in library books was not only packed, but bumping Rap music. It was sort of an anomaly if you ask me, but I went with it.

When I walked into the lounge and down the carpeted stairs I immediately spotted that guy. You know, the one who has never had a girlfriend and was rumored to be an impossible catch. He simply did not date anyone, and you’d be lucky if he chose you. Funny, on this particular night, he was with a girl. We approached each other and chatted for a few moments before he so proudly introduced me to his new girlfriend. She definitely struck me as his “type” which got me thinking.

Flashback a few more days to Oasis where the fifty-cent PBR’S (Pabst Blue Ribbon) and one-dollar Red Bull vodkas (Red Bull or a similar energy drink from a gun), a special on Thursday night’s, were flowing like the Amazon. Ben Kilcollins was rattling the outdoor Oasis arena and still at 11 pm it was 70 degrees in Portland. Amongst the mass of half-naked people dancing like it was a hot July evening, a girlfriend of mine appeared. She had previously been telling me there was someone she wanted to introduce me to who was a good friend of her boyfriends and from what I heard, very attractive. (Sidenote: Does single scream “Help my poor soul which has not yet found its counterpart?” I am confused. I’m floating on a crystal clear sea of ecstasy, my skin soaking in the sun while dolphins circle me like butlers with trays of champagne on their heads. Everyone keeps throwing me a bright orange life ring on a rope, but I don’t want it!) Regardless, he was at Oasis and she so excitedly presented him to me, whereupon he realized the not-so-subtle undertones of “You two should get together,” and right away he turned to his girlfriend and introduced me. I saw the little bit of shock and questioning on my girlfriends face. He was single for so long, but now?
