Portland, ME – Gritty McDuff’s Brewing Company announced today that it is one of four Maine restaurants to be awarded the National Restaurant Association’s (NRA’s) Restaurant Neighbor Award.  The award announcement was made today by Dick Grotton, President and CEO of the Maine Restaurant Association (MeRA).

“NRA’s Restaurant Neighbor Award honors chefs and restaurateurs for consistently going above and beyond in giving back to their communities,” Grotton noted.  “Gritty’s Co-owners Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer are essential to Maine for their ongoing role in so many neighborhood efforts and charity events within the state.”

Stebbins and Pfeffer’s success has extended beyond their three brew pubs into various community efforts.  Since 2008, Gritty’s cycling team has attracted a legion of participants committed to making an impact on Maine charities.  Throughout its history, the team has donated $92,000 in cash and support to organizations ranging from the American Lung Association to the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

The community program that has had the most significant impact on the community has been the involvement with the Dempsey Challenge. Gritty’s cycling team has had an overwhelming presence at the Dempsey Challenge -- the Lewiston, Maine, cycling and fitness event that was established in 2009 by actor and philanthropist Patrick Dempsey.  All proceeds from the event have benefited the Patrick Dempsey Center for Cancer Hope and Healing.  Not only does Gritty’s cycling team actively participate in the cycling event, but the brew pub also created the special “Dempsey Challenge Courage Ale,” a signature brew sold during the months leading up to the event.  Gritty’s has donated $1 from every one of the ales sold at their Auburn brew pub to The Dempsey Challenge.

Since its founding in 1988, Stebbins and Pfeffer have understood the importance of community involvement and have been dedicated to giving back to several local charities within the community in as many ways as possible.

Along with Gritty’s, Azure Café, King Eider’s Pub, and RiRa were also awarded the 2011 Restaurant Neighbor Award.
