Historic Chandler’s Band Returns to Fort Allen Park

Historic Chandler’s Band Returns to Fort Allen Park

Portland's historic Chandler’s Band will bring big-band music back to the Eastern Prom at 7 pm Thursday, July 26, for the Fort Allen Park Summer Concert Series.

Chandler’s Band started out as the Portland Band in 1833, when Portland was a developing port city with a population of 13,000. During the Civil War, the band served as the First Regimental Band, returning to Portland after the war. Under Daniel Chandler’s direction, the group became Maine’s most prestigious band, playing in cities throughout the Northeast. An incredible 179 years later, Chandler's Band is thought to be the nation’s second-oldest professional band in continuous service.

The Fort Allen Park Summer Concert series, scheduled for Thursday evenings through Aug. 30, features a variety of music, from blues to bluegrass and reggae to big band.
