Maine health officials have confirmed that a pool of mosquitos collected on July 16 in the town of Alfred tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). A health alert issued by the Maine Center for Disease Control states that, "This is the earliest in the season that Maine has identified EEE, previously the earliest detection was in the beginning of August." Tech Solutions May Help Reduce Cigarette Litter
Despite a ban on smoking in public parks and within 20 feet of doorways along with a $100 fine for tossing cigarette butts on the street, downtown Portland continues to be littered with them.  That has led to efforts to control the problem using a variety of methods.  As reported in May, a Portland restaurant owner offered a nickel per cigarette butt in an effort to help encourage cleanup.  However, Monument Square was littered again within days.  While the situation may seem dire, a variety of solutions are being developed or are available that could help address the problem.

The Earth-Kind roses have received a special designation given to select rose cultivars demonstrating superior pest tolerance, do well in a variety of soil types ranging from well-drained acid sands to poorly aerated, highly alkaline clays, and have excellent heat and drought tolerance.
