Banking on Gary’s House at the Annual Gourmet Gala

Bankers are accustomed to crunching numbers, checking balances and turning over cash…but at the Gourmet Gala they will be banking on their cooking expertise and raising dough for Gary’s House.  Bangor Savings Bank, Bank of Maine, Key Bank, and TruChoice Federal Credit Union will be competing in a shorter version of the popular television show “Chopped” on April 16 at the Ocean Gateway on Portland’s waterfront.  During this portion of the Gourmet Gala event, they will be provided with mystery ingredients, provided by Whole Foods Market.  The Gourmet Gala benefits Gary’s House, Mercy Hospital’s home away from home for families with a hospitalized loved one.  Named after Gary Pike, the home is a tribute to this young man’s final wish before succumbing to cancer at just 21 years old.

In addition to the competition, several restaurants and caterers will be offering delicious samples and Pine State Beverage Company will host a wine tasting.  Attendees will want to bring an additional $20, as there is a wine wall, with over 100 bottles to win, ranging in value from $20 to $200! A short live auction will be followed by a drawing for the grand prize of a $500 shopping spree at Whole Foods Market. “Last year’s cooking event was such a success that we knew we had to bring it back again this year.  It is a fun night and a great way to raise money for a much needed resource,” explained Debra Lavoie, Executive Director of the hospitality home.

The Inaugural “Forsley Award” will be presented to Fred Forsley, Founder of Shipyard Brewing Company.  Fred exemplifies outstanding leadership and commitment to others which the award recognizes. For decades, Fred has been a tireless supporter of Gary’s House and countless other organizations in our community. Under his leadership, Shipyard has become a household name in Maine.

Tickets to the event are $40 per person and can be purchased by calling 207.879.3605. The event starts at 5:30 pm, with the cooking competition beginning at 6:30 pm. The Gourmet Gala event is presented by Whole Foods Market and Maine Magazine.
