Wayside Food Programs Holding Food Drive at Whole Foods Market | Events
Because of the challenging economy, pressure has grown on Wayside to provide food to Maine's hungry. To meet its growing needs, Wayside Food Programs will hold a three-day food drive on December 6-8 that will be hosted by Whole Foods Market, located at 2 Somerset St. in Portland.
Running from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day, the food drive will focus on collecting food for families served by Wayside and its partner agencies.
Wayside Food Programs collects and distributes food to 41 agencies, including soup kitchens, food pantries and other social service providers across Cumberland County. Wayside also runs free community meals at five host sites in Portland and Westbrook, four of its own mobile food pantries, and supplies healthy snacks for kids through a program with Portland Community Policing.
“This has been a pretty tough year," says Carly Milkowski, Wayside's resource coordinator. "Food donations have been down, while need has increased. The Whole Foods drives are very important to our efforts in feeding Maine's hungry."
The Whole Foods drive will help restock Wayside’s shelves, as well as those of the other agencies it serves, providing food to kids and families throughout Cumberland County.
