92 Years Later, the Junior League of Portland, ME remains a local leader in the areas of voluntarism and community impact What: On Saturday, October 19, 2013, the Junior League of Portland, ME will host its annual kick-off event, “Super Saturday” for the 20+ new members joining the 92 year-old volunteer organization this year.  

Super Saturday festivities will kick off at the Center for Grieving Children on Forest Avenue followed by a private trolley tour through the city of Portland narrated by former Junior League of Portland, ME President Kristen Crean.  The tour will stop at organizations founded or financially supported by the Junior League of Portland, ME including the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine and the Preble Street Joe Kreisler Teen Center.

Why: Super Saturday marks the beginning of the 2013-14 program year for the Junior League of Portland, ME’s new member class and introduces them to both the historical accomplishments of the Junior League and its existing local community projects. Since its inception in 1922, the Junior League of Portland, ME has been instrumental in many community projects, including founding the Children’s Museum & Theatre of Maine in 1924, providing charter-funding for the Center for Grieving Children and Preble Street Resource Center, founding the Kids First Center in 1998 and developing the BackPack Program in 2010 in partnership with the Good Shepherd Food Bank.  

Who: The Junior League of Portland, ME is a non-profit organization of over 250 women of southern Maine committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.

There are a variety of opportunities for interviews, filming andphotos.  Key times are:  9:00am – New Members Arrival and Breakfast at Center for Grieving Children, 555 Forest Avenue, Portland; 10am – Trolley Tour departs from Center for Grieving Children 555 Forest Avenue, Portland; 11:45am – New Members return to Center for Grieving Children for group photo, welcome by President Sandy Couch-Kelly and lunch.
