United Way Day of Caring | May 19th | 1,000 volunteers to spend a full day working to improve commun

NEARLY 1000 VOLUNTEERS TO FAN OUT ACROSS GREATER PORTLAND FOR UNITED WAY’S 19TH ANNUAL DAY OF CARING

(Portland, Maine - May 17, 2011) Thursday, May 19th, will see nearly 1,000 volunteers from local companies, schools and non-profit organizations spend a full day working to improve close to 100 community sites, when they participate in United Way’s 19th Annual Day of Caring. 

The day will begin at 8:00 a.m. with a kick-off breakfast at the Back Cove soccer field in Portland, after which volunteers, dressed in black LIVE UNITED t-shirts, will spread out to sites throughout Greater Portland to provide volunteer services. Projects this year range from gardening and clean-up, to sorting food7and painting, and are scheduled to end at 3 p.m.

Suzanne McCormick, president and CEO of United Way of Greater Portland, says: “We’re truly grateful for the number of volunteers that turn out every year for our Day of Caring.

Planet Dog Hosts Free Dog Tricks and Training Demonstration

DIANA LOGAN, CERTIFIED, PROFESSIONAL TRAINER, WILL TEACH FUN, NEW TRICKS FOR GREAT DOG TRAINING

What: Planet Dog's popular Yappy Hour will feature Diana Logan, a certified pet dog trainer (CPDT) from Maine with over 30 years experience working with animals.  Diana embraces modern, positive-reinforcement methods to help new pups get started in the right direction and to help older pups change bad habits.

When: Thursday, May 26th from 5:30 – 7:30 pm. 

Where: The Planet Dog Company Store located at 211 Marginal Way in Portland.
            
How: This is a free event for dog lovers and their canine companions.  However, donations for the Planet Dog Foundation (PDF), Planet Dog's non-profit grant-making organization, are gladly accepted.

 Mustaches in May to raise money for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program

An all star lineup of Sea Dogs players are growing Mustaches in May to raise money for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.  Dr. Lou Jacobs, a Portland Chiropractor, gained national recognition as the founder of Mystache Fights Cancer, a cancer fighting fund raising event for local organizations. He is also the director of the New England Bureau of the American Mustache Institute.  Dr. Jacobs says "The mustache revival in the state of Maine has never been stronger and there’s never been a better time to use your ‘stache for a good cause."   The doctor will be throwing the first pitch at the Sea Dogs game and showing his support for the players at 1pm on Sunday May 29, 2011 against rivals the Trenton Thunder (Yankees).

Sea Dog players are taking pledges and a $15.00 donation gets you a free ticket and a family donation of $50.00 gets you five tickets and a picture with your favorite player.

Husson University Announces 112th Commencement Ceremonies

Paul R. LePage and Diana B. Beaudoin to Receive Honorary Degrees

On Saturday, May 14, 2011, the 112th Commencement of Husson University will be held beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Winkin Sports Complex on the Husson Bangor campus. The Honorable Paul R. LePage, Governor of the State of Maine, a 1971 graduate of Husson, will be the Commencement Speaker and will receive an Honorary Doctorate for Public Service. Dr. Diana Beaudoin, longtime member of the Husson Board of Trustees will receive an honorary Doctorate in Education.  On May 21, 2011, Husson will hold a second commencement at 11 a.m. at the Woodfords Corner Congregational Church in Portland.  State Representative and former Cumberland County Sheriff Marc Dion will be the commencement speaker.

At the two ceremonies the University will award a total of 685 degrees.

The Blue Moon Chronicles at Lucid Stage

Pearwater Productions brings to Lucid Stage the Maine Premiere of The Blue Moon Chronicles a wonderfully funny and critically acclaimed, Gay romantic-comedy written by South Portland resident Jeffrey Kagan-McCann The Blue Moon Chronicles takes a humorous look at Eric Callahan, a young, ambitious, uptight, Jewish-Catholic, gay Lawyer from New Haven, Connecticut who’s searching for the meaning of love, happiness and acceptance by the people in his life. These plays were written and directed by South Portland resident Jeffrey Kagan-McCann. Once In A Blue Moon, first premiered in workshop production in Hartford, Connecticut. Later the show would premiere at Northwest Actors Studio in Seattle, Washington, then he would soon add it’s farcical companion piece, My Gay Son’s Wedding. Wedding recently had its Maine Premiere production last fall at Old Port Playhouse.
