South Portland, Maine – The Portland Quartet will perform at Gingko Blue, Saturday, June 11, 5-8 PM!  Gingko Blue, Portland newest upscale lounge, is located at 455 Fore Street in Portland, Maine (on the corner of Fore and Union Streets, just down from Walter’s and across the street from the Portland Harbor Hotel).  There is no cover charge.  Any adult over the age of 21 may attend.

Inaugural Maine VisionWalk Aims to Raise $50K for Cutting-Edge Blindness Research

Portland, ME – The Foundation Fighting Blindness (www.FightBlindness.org) will host its inaugural Maine 5K VisionWalk on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at Payson Park on Baxter Boulevard in Portland, ME. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the Walk will start at 10 a.m. The event will raise money for research that will lead to preventions, treatments and cures for retinal degenerative diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa, macular degeneration, Usher syndrome, Stargardt disease, and numerous others. These sight-stealing diseases affect more than 10 million Americans of all races and ethnic groups, young and old.

“It’s devastating to watch a loved one lose vision and independence to a retinal disease,” says VisionWalk Co-Chair Kristine Hedtler, of Portland.

A DAY OF FUN AND LEARNING FOR CHILDREN, PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS

This saturday, June 11, the Falmouth Historical Society will be opening its museum at 60 Woods Road in Falmouth for the 2011 season. The opening program is focused on Sustainable Living (reducing our use of the earth’s natural resources) and will include a fun filled and learning experience day of sheep shearing, Alpaca petting, wool spinning, herb gardening and special displays of 1800’s cooking utensils, period glassware and Baker’s Chocolate memorabilia. Baked goods and herb plants will also be for sale. Visit the gift shop for history books, cook books, maps, coverlets and other Falmouth items.

Barbara Bush to Visit Children’s Hospital That Bears Her Name

Former first lady Barbara Bush will visit and read to patients at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital on her 86th birthday, Wednesday, June 8.

After the reading, she’ll be presented with a cake as well as a lilac tree which will have cards from the children hanging on it. The tree will be delivered to the Bush’s home at Walker's Point for planting.

The children will also present Mrs. Bush with gifts for her two dogs (one is expected to join her on the visit).
