PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Portland's "Secret Santa" has announced that he's back for another year and plans to hand out more than $20,000 to unsuspecting residents of the southern Maine city.

A spokesman identified in an email to the Portland Press Herald as "Santa's media elf Tom" says Secret Santa will be distributing $100 bills at random this Christmas season.

Officials say if Santa follows through on his promise, the campaign will have given away $140,000 since it began seven years ago at a Goodwill store.

Secret Santa tries to target specific areas where people in need might be present, such as food banks or secondhand stores.

Elf Tom says Secret Santa hopes his display of generosity inspires others to "pay it forward" as well.

This year’s tour could land just about anywhere in southern Maine, the newspaper reports. Secret Santa’s helpers are planning on four or five appearances, and are encouraging the public to offer suggestions on his Facebook page “SecretSantaPortland” or by email atSecretSantaPortland@gmail.com.
