Punk Rope in Maine!

Allison Kennie, who’s in her early 30s, was looking for something different to help her get back in shape after she had her daughter a few years ago. Friends suggested Punk Rope.

If you’ve never heard of Punk Rope, it’s kind of a cross between recess and boot camp. It was created by Tim Haft, a personal trainer and USA Track & Field Coach, and combines jump roping, play and music. Read more.

Girls on the Run-Maine Team Completes Turkey Trot

Sunday was a special day for GOTR-ME, as it marked the culmination of an incredible year of working to bring our program to Maine.  Last fall, Girls on the Run in Maine was just an idea, but over the weekend, 32 girls from our inaugural season ran in their FIRST celebratory 5k!  The Maine Track Club generously offered our girls and their running buddies (someone who runs with the girls to support them) discounted entries to the Turkey Trot in Cape Elizabeth.  A huge thank you to Bob Ayotte, the Race Director, for actively ensuring our girls were highlighted and felt special crossing the line!

If you drove to breakfast on Sunday via Deering Oaks, you probably saw a sea of pink and green.  Or maybe you saw tutus, colorful wigs, Oakie doing the Zumba or lots of smiles.  What you saw was the inaugural Hot ChocoTrot benefitting Girls on the Run-Maine -a smashing success!

The idea was to introduce our mission to Maine, which is to inspire preteen girls to be joyful, healthy and confident through running.

The curriculum for our 10 week after school program helps girls tackle tough issues, such as gossiping, bullying and negative self talk while increasing running endurance.  The result is physically and emotionally strong girls who, first and foremost, have fun!

We wanted a 5k event that reflected this spirit, so, we made it untimed, encouraged silly socks and had fun surprises like air guitar and “energy bubbles” at water stops.  We also gave awards not to the fastest but to reflect participation, so we highlighted the best tutu, best s
