PORTLAND , Maine – A new group of Coast Guard Academy cadets arrived at the Maine State Pier from New London, CT on July 28 to board the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Eagle. The cadets are attending "Swab Summer", a difficult seven-week boot-camp of academic and physical training intended to train these everyday teens to become Coast Guard Officers.

As part of the training, the cadets embark on a one-week tour aboard the Eagle, swapping out companies at each port of call. During this phase of their training, the cadets learn the finer points of life aboard as well as experience many valuable training and team building exercises and develop an esprit de corps. For many, this is their first time living aboard a Coast Guard Cutter and is a welcome break from the classroom environment. In total, over 250 cadets are attending 'Swab Summer' this year.
