Work begins on deepwater pier

PORTLAND, ME (NEWS CENTER) --  Construction is set to begin today on the Deepwater Pier in the Portland Harbor.

This marks the beginning of the "Ocean Gateway Pier 2" project. It is estimated that it will cost nearly five million dollars by the time it concludes.

The Pier-- also called a Megaberth-- is being built in hopes of attracting more large ships to the harbor. The deepwater pier will double the capacity for cruise ships and other large commercial vessels.

The pier is being funded by a bond that was approved this past June.
