Urban Epic Challenge - Saturday, July 9 - Portland

Portland, Maine- On Saturday, July 9 the Portland Waterfront will be turned into a giant obstacle course giving participants the opportunity to run, crawl, slide, shuffle, hop and scramble to the finish line.  The event is an opportunity for athletes to test their agility, speed and endurance along the Portland waterfront, while helping to support a worthwhile organization at the same time.

Organizer of the event, Will Thomas of Tri-Maine, says The Urban Epic Challenge presented by Oxford Networks offers a course that rivals any existing race in terms of variety of terrain, unique elements, and stunning views. The obstacles have been designed with the input of industry experts from the worlds of fitness, outdoor recreation, mountain operations, and the military which makes for a challenging event any athlete will relish.

“We have created a signature event for Portland that will showcase the Portland Waterfront and challenge athletes in unique and interesting ways. The event is a chip timed event, with awards being presented to the fastest finishers in various categories.  While it is a race, the fun is being with a community of motivated, fit people, and celebrating the City of Portland .  The race will conclude with a post-race celebration in the heart of downtown Portland at the Maine State  Pier,” said Thomas.

In addition to being a challenging athletic event, the Urban Epic Challenge presented by Oxford Networks will bring the community together to support an important community organization.

The Center for Grieving Children provides support to grieving children, teens, families, and the community through peer support, outreach, and education. More than 125 volunteers, including highly trained peer-group facilitators, serve the Center every week and help create a loving community that fosters each individual’s resiliency and emotional well-being.

“The Center for Grieving Children is excited to have been named the race beneficiary for the Urban Epic Challenge presented by Oxford Networks,” said Anne Lynch, executive director. “Contributions like this make it possible for the Center to offer our services for free to families who are facing some of the most difficult emotional challenges imaginable. Being part of a fun event like Urban Epic is a great opportunity for us.”

One of the unique aspects about the Urban Epic Challenge is that it takes place in the heart of Portland .  The city terrain and landscape itself is used to create the obstacles and challenges while giving participants and spectators the opportunity to enjoy all the city has to offer.

"Few communities get to be home to such a fun and unique athletic competition, and I look forward to watching the racers tackle the race's new hurdle each year," stated City of Portland Mayor Nicholas Mavodones. "The Portland Waterfront is the perfect location for this year's Urban Epic Challenge and I wish all the competitors the best of luck in reaching the finish line."

Sponsoring the event is Oxford Networks, an award winning telecommunications company based in Lewiston , Maine .  According to Matt Jancovic, director of marketing and customer service for the company, the Urban Epic Challenge is a unique opportunity for athletes to test themselves in a fun and challenging way.

“The Urban Epic Challenge presented by Oxford Networks is a great opportunity for the community to come together to take part in a fun and challenging physical activity.  Oxford Networks is proud to play a part in bringing this event to Portland .”
