Red Cross in Maine to hold Armed Forces Walks

Portland, Maine, May 6, 2011 – Maine’s First Lady and Adjutant General have partnered
with the American Red Cross to sponsor two Armed Forces Walks which are scheduled for
June 5, 2011.
The Red Cross movement began on the battlefield in 1881. Today, the work continues, as
volunteers and paid staff of the Red Cross forms a vast and unique network of services that
provides assistance 24 hours a day to aid both our troops abroad as well as their loved ones
here in Maine. The Red Cross efficiently provides time-sensitive communications and serves
as the link between the medical community at home and military members at home and
abroad. The Red Cross also uses this network to coordinate with military aid societies and
provide a local contact for financial assistance to active duty members, retirees, and their
families. Services at military installations and military hospitals provide continued emotional
support to wounded personnel, veterans, and their families.
Red Cross services extend beyond active duty personnel with the Get to Know Us Before
You Need Us and Coping With Deployment Programs, delivered in communities across
the state and designed to help families transition when a loved one is about to be deployed
and when they return from service.
The Red Cross in Maine promises to be there whenever or wherever help is needed; and the
need is immense. In fact, the Red Cross assists about 3 military families every day in Maine.
