PORTLAND - Saturday will be the first public workout session for Maine's newest semi-professional
football team, the Maine Sabers.

For those who follow Maine football, the Maine Sabers is a familiar moniker. From 1991 through 1993,
the Sabers were Maine's dominant semi-professional football team.

In January, the Maine Sabers were officially admitted into the Eastern Football League, the oldest semi-
professional league in the nation, along with 15 other teams. The team is based in Portland and will
play at nearby fields such as Portland's Fitzpatrick Stadium or Scarborough High School's stadium. The
team's 2011 schedule has yet to be finalized but the season will run from late June through September.

The team was organized by Stephen Goodrich, a former administrator with the original Sabers and
Jason McLeod, Windham High School football team's offensive coordinator. In addition to McLeod,
the team has veteran coaching talent including defensive coordinator Chris Kempton (Bates College)
and Skip Capone (Bates College/Lewiston HS).

“Maine has so many talented athletes,” said Goodrich. “We look forward to showcasing these young
men and creating a great experience for them and our fans.”

The team held its first workout at the Portland Sports Dome with nearly 60 participants including semi-
pro veteran, linebacker/wide receiver, Chris Libby of Biddeford High School, former Husson College
quarterback and Brewers minor leaguer Jeremy Shorey, Portland High School and Colorado State
linebacker Brandan Dorsett, and offensive lineman Jon Benson of Biddeford HS and Husson College.
High School standouts include running back Justin Vallacci of Gorham High School and offensive
linemen, Brian Woodbury of Scarborough High School and Dan Sweat of Windham High School.

Saturday's workout at NOON at the Portland Sports Dome is open to the media and anyone interested in playing—regardless of
experience. No equipment is required other than shorts and cleats. Jon Jennings of the Maine Red
Claws will be addressing the team at the conclusion of the workout and the Red Claws will
acknowledge the Sabers at their game this Sunday at the Portland Expo at 1pm.
